i posted a graphic on foods that are toxic to dogs last night, and someone asked me to post something about foods that are toxic to cats. a lot of the things listed on the graphic last night are toxic to both cats and dogs (caffeine, a lot of dairy, garlic, grapes, mushrooms, etc.), but this is a list more specific to cats. cats are more likely to get into house plants, too, and there are many plants that are toxic to cats. be careful when buying plants to not accidentally buy something that could hurt them (especially around the holidays - both mistletoe and pointsettia are poisonous to cats).
if you know that your animal has eaten something toxic, you can force vomiting by giving them saltwater. if they seem ok after that, call the vet and ask if they should be seen. if your animal ever acts listless, unable to walk a straight line, or vomiting (especially if it happens repeatedly, or with foamy saliva), get them immediate assistance. it helps if you have a sense of what they might have eaten, but don’t waste time. it doesn’t take long for their livers and/or kidneys to be damaged irreparably. i can tell you from experience that there’s nothing more heartbreaking than losing a beloved animal friend to something you might have been able to prevent, had you been aware of the access to and toxicity of something they got into.
